What to Expect

Thank you for considering us to be your vet! In order to best care for our clients, our customer service representatives may have directed you to this page to answer your questions about what to expect when beginning your pets’ care with Jarrettsville Veterinary Center.

Before Your Appointment

Everything we do starts with a doctor exam. Our front desk cannot diagnose, recommend treatments, nor recommend over the counter medications for your pet.
In order to hold your appointment, we require a $50.00 deposit to be paid with the front desk when booking. The $50.00 will then be used towards your exam cost on the day of the appointment.  If you cancel or reschedule within 48 hours, the deposit will be refunded or used for the rescheduled appointment. We do need to speak with you again because we do not keep cards on file to automatically process a refund. If the appointment is not canceled with 48 hours notice, the deposit is non-refundable.

The client services representative will ask you to have your vet forward us records before the appointment. These records can be sent to jarrettsvillevet@gmail.com. If you are unable to have them sent, please bring them on the day of your appointment so that we have your pet’s complete history. This includes records from any breeder or rescue where you obtained your pet.  You will also be asked to bring a fecal sample in case it is needed. There’s a lot about a pet’s health that can be seen in urine or a fecal sample.

For the Price Conscious

If you are interested in exploring costs ahead of time, you can visit our page here: Our Services and Pricing
You will see a range for some of the services, especially surgeries. Each pet is individual and has different needs when it comes to medication, surgery time, complexity, etc. Dental procedures have the largest range because there are many things that can’t be seen until your pet is sedated for x-rays. You can search for procedures on Pawbly.com to see real patient invoices for the best idea of what the costs include. Look for a breed/weight that is similar to your pet for the best estimate. Our receptionists will not be able to give you a more accurate cost than what is shown in these 2 places.

During Your Appointment

At your appointment, a technician will escort you to a room and ask questions about your pet to learn about them and go over their history. They will weigh your pet and may take their temperature.  Then the doctor will come in to go over any concerns you or they have. If your pet allows, the doctor will examine them in the room. Some pets do better away from their parent and they will be brought in the back to complete the exam, and have their nails trimmed and ears cleaned. After the doctor puts together a treatment plan, a tech will go over any medications recommended and next steps such as diagnostics or follow ups.

If you are on a budget, please let the doctor know what you are comfortable with so that they can offer a treatment plan within your means. There are grants you may qualify for once your pet has a diagnosis from a vet. Please see our Financial Guidance and Additional Resources page to view some of the options we’ve found.

After Your Appointment

Your tech will give you your “report card” which is the treatment plan from the doctor to take with you and any take home medication/prescription food. The front desk will then check you out and collect payment for the appointment (minus the $50.00 deposit). Payment is due at the time of service. If follow ups are needed, our client representatives can make the next appointment for you unless it is dependent on lab results.
If there was bloodwork, a urinalysis, or fecal samples to be sent out, the doctor will call or email you with the results as they are received (usually within 3 days for routine tests). The doctor will discuss any treatments, diagnostics, or follow ups based on the lab results and appointments can be made with one of our client representatives. If you have questions about this later , you can always send us an email at jarrettsvillevet@gmail.com or give us a call at 410-692-6171 to pass a message on to the doctor for a return call.
